This CarPlay change may be the missing link for Tesla support
Apple and Tesla are reportedly working together to bring CarPlay to the automaker’s electric vehicles. A new CarPlay technology highlighted during WWDC could be the final piece needed for Tesla CarPlay support.
Apple and Tesla have been reportedly working on CarPlay integration for months
Apple CarPlay has been around for over a decade, giving iPhone users safer access to apps and services while driving. While most automakers support CarPlay, some brands like Tesla have never adopted Apple’s infotainment feature.
More recently, other brands that have long supported CarPlay have dropped support in newer vehicles. Meanwhile, Apple continues to improve CarPlay with new features, app categories, and more.
One new feature that arrived this year is called route sharing. It allows a navigation app to share routing data with the vehicle.
Syncing up routing data can be important for autonomous driving features as well as electric vehicles that use charging stops and battery level as part of navigation.
During a WWDC session on CarPlay for developers, Apple highlighted route sharing as a recent addition to CarPlay in iOS 26.4.
That’s the current version of iPhone software that came out in March. That means the technology is available for CarPlay developers now, not pending in a future update like iOS 26.5 or iOS 27.
Is route sharing the last missing piece for Tesla’s rumored CarPlay support? CarPlay already has a native Grok app, so that’s another feature Tesla drivers won’t give up if they ever get Apple CarPlay. For now, Tesla drivers still need to rely on third-party solutions for CarPlay support.
