Anthropic's AI chatbot Claude faces outage; Downdetector records sharp rise in user complaints
Anthropic's AI chatbot Claude experienced service disruptions on June 2, with users reporting problems accessing the platform across multiple regions.

Data from Downdetector showed a sharp rise in complaints, suggesting the issue was affecting a broad set of users. Reports increased from a baseline of one report to more than 230 around 12:41 PM. The outage graph also showed smaller spikes earlier in the day before a larger increase around midday.

Claude is Anthropic's AI assistant platform that powers consumer chat services, developer tools and enterprise applications through models such as Opus, Sonnet and Haiku.

Claude Chat affected

Downdetector data showed that most complaints were related to Claude Chat. Around 62% of reports were linked to Claude Chat, while 17% involved the app and 15% involved the website.

Users also reported login issues, API access problems and latency. Posts on social media indicated that some users were unable to load conversations, receive responses from Claude or access related services.

The outage appeared to affect both web and app users, pointing to a broader platform issue rather than device-specific problems.

Anthropic confirms the issue

Anthropic acknowledged the disruption on its status page and listed an incident titled "Elevated errors across multiple models."

The company first posted the incident at 06:04 UTC on June 2. At 06:39 UTC, the status was updated to "Identified," with Anthropic saying the cause had been identified and that a fix was being implemented.

Several services were marked as experiencing a Partial Outage, including Claude.ai, Claude Console (platform.claude.com), Claude API (api.anthropic.com) and Claude Code. Anthropic had not provided an estimated timeline for full-service restoration at the time of writing.

Recent disruptions

The latest incident follows several service disruptions recorded on Anthropic's status page in recent days, including elevated error rates affecting Claude's Opus, Sonnet and Haiku models.

While Downdetector data is based on user-submitted reports and does not always indicate a complete outage, Anthropic's acknowledgement confirmed that the company was investigating and working to restore affected services.

Recovery awaited

Users continued to report issues such as failed response generation, timeout errors and blank chat screens during the disruption.

The company has not disclosed technical details about the cause of the outage. Until further updates are provided, users have been advised to monitor Anthropic's status page for information on service recovery.
