Opendoor CEO fires entire India team in major operational shift, says ‘Customers are in America’
When Opendoor launched its 2.0 strategy a few months ago, the company had nearly 250 employees in India.

"Our customers are in America, and that's where our operational work belongs," Nejatian said.
Over the months, some of those roles had already been relocated back to the United States. The latest announcement has finalised that process, affecting all remaining India-based staff.
Nejatian acknowledged that the departing employees had done "meaningful work for Opendoor".
He said, “Today, we are finalising bringing these roles closer to our customers in America and beginning the process of winding down our India-based operations. This affects all of our colleagues in India who have done meaningful work for Opendoor.”
“I am grateful for their dedication and this decision is not a reflection of the quality of their work. Our colleagues in India are great people, and we recommend them to anyone hiring,” he added.
Nejatian also addressed the reason behind shutting down the India operation.
He said, “Our customers are in America, and the operational work we do for them is best done close to them. For years, Opendoor built a large team in India to handle manual workflows across fragmented systems.”
I shared this note earlier today with the entire team at Opendoor.
Today we began to say goodbye to our colleagues in India as we wind down our India operations.

He also pointed to the company's push to hire AI-native, customer-facing teams as part of its restructuring strategy. “As we have unified these systems and have hired small Al-native customer-facing teams throughout the US, we need all this operational work to be done in person and close to our customers.”
The India closure is the latest in a long series of workforce reductions at the real estate technology company.
The workforce reduction drive accelerated after co-founder Keith Rabois returned as chairman and Kaz Nejatian was appointed CEO. Rabois had publicly stated he wanted to cut the workforce.
“There are 1,400 employees at Opendoor. I don’t know what most of them do. We don’t need more than 200 of them,” Rabois told CNBC’s ‘Squawk on the Street’ last year.
Opendoor did not disclose severance details or a specific timeline for completing the wind-down.
